Prompting optimises the wrong thing. A better sentence gets you a better answer once — and next week you write the sentence again, slightly differently, and get a slightly different answer. Nothing accumulates. The cleverness lives in the prompt, which is to say it lives nowhere.
Directing puts the cleverness in the setup instead: what outcome are we after, what context applies, what must never happen, what process to follow, how to check the result. That's not a longer prompt — it's a structure the model stands on, and it holds for every task after this one.
The tell is repeatability. A prompter's good day can't be reproduced; a director's setup produces the same quality on a bad one. Direct the system; don't coax the model.
