Structure Beats Magic
The family

Five sites and a practice, each doing one job

Eight sites and a practice, each doing one job. They share a method, a design base and a source of truth on disk — the argument is written once and published where it belongs.

The practice

Jaco van der Laan

Consulting, services and the work itself.

Where the work is offered rather than explained: data architecture and modelling for organisations that have outgrown their spreadsheets and their patience. The other sites argue the method; this one does it for a client.

The thesis

Structure Beats Magic you are here

Knowledge management, re-architected for the AI era.

The parent argument: structure plus data plus AI plus rules plus skills becomes a system. Written from a personal vault of a hundred thousand files, which is the point — the method is proven on its author before it is sold to anyone.

The method

Breakthrough Modeling

Structure, movement, meaning and AI-readability in one model.

Data modelling came back because AI needs it, and came back insufficient. This is the method that unites the two worlds modelling kept apart — modelling structure and modelling movement — at the scale and pace an enterprise actually has.

The execution

Breakthrough Coding

Not the typist. Not the spectator.

The sibling of the method: what happens once the model exists and the code comes out of it. The data engineer stopped writing most of it — and there are two ways to stop typing, only one of which is a promotion. This is the one where you still answer for what runs: generation from metadata, rules the generator has to satisfy, and building alongside an assistant without handing over the judgement.

The model

Structured Metadata

Metadata as the material you build with.

What the structure IS, how it is described, and why description is the asset rather than the paperwork. Metadata that does not just document the platform but runs it.

The rendering

Structured Diagrams

Diagrams are generated from metadata.

The visual layer. A diagram is not a drawing you maintain but a view generated from the model — always current, in whatever notation the reader needs. Read the picture from the source; never transcribe the source into a picture.

The year itself

Breakthrough Sabbatical

A year taken on purpose — foundations, clearing out, and rest.

Not an ordinary sabbatical. The place where the non-work half lives: film, music, reading, the stage, and what a year off actually looks like when you spend it building rather than recovering. The other sites argue the method; this one shows the conditions it was built under.

The demonstration

Structured Memories

A box of old postcards, treated as data.

122 Rotterdam postcards from a private collection, described with 27 fields each and made searchable. The smallest site in the family and the most concrete: it shows what the method looks like when it is applied to material that has no budget, no team and no obligation to be tidy.

The proof elsewhere

Structured Wandering

The same method, applied to travel.

Structure applied to wandering — not to remove the wandering, but to make it repeatable. The strongest evidence a method is general is that it works somewhere it was not designed for.

Every site here is generated from the same source on disk. The method is the argument, so it had better survive being applied to itself.
